This music is taken from the soundtrack of the movie "Sharky's Machine." The personnel is collective and most likely, the tracks were recorded at more than one session. No specific information regarding recording dates or locations could be found. An unidentified string section is present. Arrangements are by Al Capps, Bob Florence, James Getzoff and Bill Holman. Four other tracks on the LP, Route 66 (featuring The Manhattan Transfer), two versions of My Funny Valentine (featuring Chet Baker and Julie London) and Sharky's Theme (featuring Eddie Harris) do not involve the supporting horns.
Although track c is a feature for trumpeter Doc Severinsen, a trombone soloist is also heard prominently but this is probably not Benny Powell. Watrous is a good possibility. An alto saxophone (very probably Art Pepper) solo is heard on track a. A vibraphone solo (very probably Terry Gibbs) is heard on track b.

The ensemble is known as The African Rhythms Orchestra. This recording comes from live concerts, on consecutive evenings, parts of which were recorded for broadcast on NPR's Jazzset. I do not know from which night(s) the performances were taken and therefore, the personnel is collective because Harper was present only on January 25 and Payne and Stewart only on January 26. Kibwe is listed as musical director and co-arranger of tracks a-c which comprise Weston's "Ancient Future Suite" premiered at these Jazz at Lincoln Center events. The Xalam (xal) is a stringed instrument from Senegal. The Kora (kor) is a West African harp. The Pipa (pip) is a Chinese 4-stringed lute. The Kalimba (kal) is an African thumb piano.
