This live concert recreates the Marty Paich arrangements of jazz standards first recorded under Art Pepper's leadership, in 1959, for Contemporary Records, on which Herb Geller was a sideman (see session of March 14, 1959). In an email, Geller reports the following: "I did that production 4 times. The first time was in Long Beach for Ken Poston, the second time for the BBC with Jiggs Whigham conducting in a studio, the third time was in Frankfurt with Conte Candoli and the Hessischer Rundfunk orchestra with Jorg Achim Keller conducting and finally in Hamburg where I also conducted." It is not known if recordings of the other three concerts exist. All three of the other saxophonists were students of Geller.

The timings shown do not include announcements or applause. Tracks h and i are performed as a medley. Geller solos on all tracks.

The NDR Big Band is heard on tracks j-l but its personnel, other than the musicians shown, are not given. Geller solos on all tracks except d.
