The date of this session and matrix number come from the Bruyninckx discography which also assumes that the personnel probably resembles that of the June 24, 1957 Barclay session. An unidentified string section is present. The liner notes to Barclay 82138 and Fresh Sound 515 indicate that this track was recorded on June 24, 1957 but the matrix number suggests an earlier date. Lucky Thompson does not solo on this track.

     unissued

An unidentified string section is present. Lucky Thompson does not solo on either of the issued tracks both of which feature violinist Stephane Grapelli. The liner notes to Barclay 82138 and Fresh Sound 515 indicate that several other titles were recorded at this session: Et Voila!, Place Blanche, Quand Je Monte Chez Toi, Ne M'Laissez Pas Comme Ca, Sermonette, Avec Ces Yeux-La, Pas Moi and Craven, but this is not supported by the Barclay matrix numbers given in the Bruyninckx discography which clearly suggest other dates. Also, it is unlikely (although not impossible) that ten titles would have been recorded at one session. An issued version of track c was recorded on October 18, 1957 but Don Byas rather than Lucky Thompson was present on that session.

United Artists LP 12": UAL 3023 — Americans In Paris   (1959)
     Barclay (Fr.) EP: 72133

An unidentified string section is present. Lucky Thompson solos briefly on both tracks. The liner notes to Barclay 82138 and Fresh Sound 515 indicate that these titles were recorded on June 24, 1957 but this is not supported by the matrix numbers given in the Bruyninckx discography.

There are several additional recording sessions of the Eddie Barclay Orchestra for the Barclay label in 1957 and 1958 and considerable confusion as to the dates and personnel. I have not included these because it is most likely that Don Byas rather than Lucky Thompson is present on them. The Bruyninckx and Raben general jazz discographies as well as the Ruppli Mercury Label Discography indicate that Lucky Thompson was present on Eddie Barclay Paris recording sessions of June 5, 1958, October 8, 1958, October 25, 1958 and November 15, 1958 but Hans Jensen has noted that all of these appearances are highly unlikely because of documentation showing that Thompson was in the USA during this period.

The personnel is incomplete. From aural evidence, the orchestra is clearly larger than indicated in discographies and in the liner notes to the CD reissue Verve Gitanes 013 036-2. An unidentified 13-piece string section is present.

The Bruyninckx and Lord discographies indicate that the orchestra was recorded in Paris on July 15, 1957 but Richmond's vocals were recorded in New York on September 16, 1957; however, the liner notes to Verve Gitanes CD 013 036-2 state that the entire session was recorded in Paris on September 16, 1957 and say nothing about overdubbing of the vocals. The CD liner notes do not list Lucky Thompson as part of the orchestra personnel but aural evidence suggests he is very probably the tenor saxophonist soloing briefly on tracks b-d.

Symphonium (Fr.) LP 12": 1230 (?) — Lucky In Paris

Lucky Thompson (ss) on a, e-f; (ts) on b-d; Michel Hausser (vib) on a-b, d-f; Martial Solal (p) on a-b, d-f; Gilbert Gassin (b) on a-b, d-f; Gérard 'Dave' Pochonet (d) on a-b, d-f; Prinz Ghana M'Bow (cng) on c.

This appears to be Lucky Thompson's first commercial recording on soprano saxophone. The existence of a 7-inch, 45 RPM EP issued as Symphonium (Fr.) 1230, containing 4 tracks taken from this and the following session, is confirmed. The Jepsen, Bruyninckx and Lord discographies as well as the liner notes to High Note HCD 7045 indicate that all tracks from both of these sessions were issued on Symphonium (Fr.) LP 1230 but the existence of such an LP has not been confirmed. It seems unusual but not impossible that an EP and LP would have the same catalog number. Another explanation is that the catalog number of the LP has been incorrectly assigned by discographers. Until a copy of the LP can be located and examined, this situation will remain unresolved.

"O.W." is not the Dizzy Gillespie composition, "Ow" despite being indicated as so on HighNote HCD 7045 and in discographies. Track b is incorrectly listed in discographies as "Brother Bop." Regarding the issues of this material, see the comments for the preceding session.

Track a is incorrectly listed as "One Cool Night" on all issues but it is definitely the blues called "Takin' Care 'o Business" on the February 22, 1956 session. The Lord Discography indicates that tracks a and b were recorded on February 7, 1958 which is probably a typographical error. The tracks issued on the EPs are mono and those on the LP stereo but the mono and stereo tracks have the same timings and are apparently the same takes. The saxophone solos on tracks c and d are by Jack Sels.

This is Workshop No. 6 of the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR). It was part of a series of radio and TV broadcasts produced by Hans Gertberg. The information comes from the NDR archives.

On track e, Lucky Thompson is accompanied by bass and drums only and on tracks l and o, by piano, bass and drums. He appears in larger ensembles on tracks a, b, q and r. Track c is a vibraphone/piano duet. Track j features Grenu and the rhythm section and track g, vibraphone and rhythm section. Track k features Koller and Reinhardt on baritone saxophone with the only bass and drums. Tracks m and n involve alto saxophone, vibraphone and rhythm section.

Track h is credited to Count Basie in the NDR archives but confirmation of a Basie tune with this title could not be found. The title is "Topsy" spelled backwards and audition reveals a thinly disguised contrafact of that Eddie Durham-Edgar Battle classic from the Basie repertoire, probably penned by one of the participants.

This is a track from a live television broadcast, "Modern Jazz At the Blue Note," featuring the Bud Powell Trio. The other tracks recorded at this performance ("Get Happy," "John's Abbey") involve only piano, bass and drums. The TV show director was Jean-Christophe Averty and the source of this series of videos is the INA (Institut National de l'Audiovisuel). The recording date shown comes from the VHS and DVD issues and is probably accurate although other sources show June 15, 1960. This performance is incomplete, ending during 4-bar exchanges between Thompson and Clarke.

g.   Is the Long Road the Right Road? (Our Shared Blessings) - 4:23  (Lucky Thompson)
h.   It's Fantasy (Scratching the Surface) - 3:15  (Lucky Thompson)
All titles on:      Candid (Eng.) CD: CCD 79035 — Lord, Lord, Am I Ever Gonna Know?   (1997)
Candid (Jpn.) CD: TECW 20490 — Lord, Lord, Am I Ever Gonna Know?   (1997)

Lucky Thompson (ss) on b, d-e, g; (ts) on a, c-d, f, h; Martial Solal (p) on a-c, e-h; Peter Trunk (b) on a-c, e-h; Kenny Clarke (d) on a-c, e-h.

Titles for tracks b-h (shown in parenthesis) were arbitrarily assigned by producers Mark Gardner and Alan Bates when the recordings that make up the CD Candid 79035 were discovered (without titles). The equivalences with Thompson's titles, recorded only from radio broadcasts, were apparently not known when the CD was issued but finally discovered in 2006 by saxophonist Chris Byars when he auditioned the radio broadcast of April 28, 1961 (see session below). So far, the original Thompson title for track e has not been found. Candid CD 79035 includes a 4:40 spoken introduction by Thompson recorded on March 20, 1968.

The source who provided track e indicates it was recorded at Molde in 1964. But this seems unlikely since there is no documentation of Lucky Thompson being in Europe that year. Tracks b, c and e are incomplete.
