The issue of track b on Prestige 78 No. 889 is edited with a timing of 2:12; the vibraphone and valve trombone solos are deleted resulting in a performance of essentially one chorus. Many thanks to Geoff Wheeler for noting this. Nancy Overton's "vocal" on this track is a dramatic recitation of the lyrics.

Sonny Terry discographer Chris Smith reports that the matrix number of Louise shown (3507) is from an inspected copy of the issue. This differs from that given in standard discographies (3501) and suggests that more than the four tracks listed may have been recorded at this session. The matrix numbers of the unissued titles are untraced. Groove was a subsidiary of RCA Victor.

Teddy Charles is listed as "Stix Kahn" on the LP. No vibraphone can be heard on track a but rather, a celeste which is not credited in the LP liner notes. Charles remembers playing this instrument on the recording session. Discographies indicate that Charles performs on other tracks of the LP recorded in March of 1954. However, the personnel assignments given in the LP liner notes reveal his presence only on these two tracks.
Important caveat regarding the Earl Bostic sessions below of October 8 & 9, 1954 and January 27, 1955: In 1959, in King Records' Cincinnati, OH studios, Earl Bostic rerecorded many tunes in stereo that had originally been done in mono. The personnel on the stereo sessions bear no resemblance to those of the earlier ones. Although the stereo tracks were given new matrix numbers, they were issued by King on LPs with the same title, catalog number and content as the original mono versions leading to great confusion.

It should be noted that versions of some of the above titles which appear on the King stereo LPs 529 (Let's Dance With Earl Bostick) and 503 (Bostic For You) and the corresponding CD reissues KCD-529 and KCD-503 were actually recorded in March and June of 1959 with completely different ensembles. It should also be noted that the version of Liebestraum on See For Miles SEECD 720 is not the one from this session as claimed on the CD insert but rather, the stereo remake of June 10, 1959 with different personnel. I have not confirmed that track d is, in fact, the take issued on Definitive DRCD 11295. No horns other than that of Bostic are audible on track c.

J.R. Monterose is incorrectly listed as "Jack Montrose" and "J.R. Montrose" on the London LP jacket and his instrument is also wrongly listed as alto sax. Track j is listed as "Can't Get Out Of This Dream" on the LP jacket. A bongo drum is audible on track e which may be a simulation produced by Puma's guitar. The correct track order is as shown above (side 1: tracks a-f; side 2: tracks g-l) and not that given on the back of the LP jacket. Teddy Charles solos on tracks a, c, f-i, l. Fresh Sound CD 320 was issued under J.R. Monterose's name and is a collection of tracks from several sessions on which he was present.

This performance was a Voice of America radio broadcast which has, apparently, never been issued. It was part of a panel discussion "Jazz from the Inside Out" on Sunday afternoon of the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival. Tapes of this event are stored at the Library of Congress. The Library of Congress documentation indicates a title "Sounds of April" which is most likely a misidentification of Teo Macero's composition "Sounds of May." An online Charles Mingus discography

This fascinating session is perhaps best characterized as jazz-influenced, contemporary chamber music. Most of the solo sections seem written out but Teddy Charles's vibraphone solo on track e sounds improvised.

These 3 tracks were never issued on the original LP, Prestige 7063 and apparently destined for an LP that was never completed. The personnel has generated much controversy. Here is an historical summary:
1. Donald Byrd (t), Phil Woods (as), Gil Melle (bar), Joe Cinderella (g), Vinnie Burke (b), Ed Thigpen (d)
This lineup appears first in:
(a) Jepsen's Jazz Records 1942-1962 (1963) and repeated in:
(b) Ruppli's Prestige Records Discography, 1972 and 1980 editions;
(c) Bruyninckx Discography, 1977 and 1987 editions;
(d) Liner notes to Prestige OJCCD-1753-2 (1990).
2. The Lord Discography (1996 print edition) shows: Art Farmer (t), Hal McKusick (as), poss. Seldon Powell (ts), Gil Melle (bar), Teddy Charles (vib), poss. George Duvivier (b), poss. Shadow Wilson (d).
3. Personnel provided by Gil Melle in a 1999 interview with Rudy Van Gelder historian Dan Skea: Art Farmer (t), Hal McKusick (as), Zoot Sims (ts), Gil Melle (bar), Teddy Charles (vib), Joe Cinderella (g), Vinnie Burke (b), Ed Thigpen (d). Melle was particularly emphatic about the presence of Sims and Charles and frustrated by their omission from the Original Jazz Classics CD liner notes.
4. Personnel in the Bruyninckx Discography, 2004 pdf edition - same as 2.
5. Personnel shown on Fresh Sound FSR-CD 479_2 (2008) and in the Lord Discography, current online version (2009): Art Farmer (t), Hal McKusick (as), Seldon Powell (ts), Gil Melle (bar), Teddy Charles (vib), George Duvivier (b), Shadow Wilson (d).
After being troubled by this session for years, I recently (August 2009) have revisited it in an attempt to definitively identify the participants. Unfortunately, that goal remains elusive. Nonetheless, here are some of my conclusions:
1. The early information, repeated on the 1990 CD reissue, is wrong. A vibraphone and tenor sax are clearly audible and the trumpeter and alto saxophonist are definitely NOT Byrd and Woods, respectively.
2. No guitar is audible on any of the tracks.
3. The musicians present beyond any doubt (aural evidence) are Farmer, McKusick, Melle and Charles.
4. Despite what Melle indicated in the 1999 interview, the tenor saxophonist is NOT Zoot Sims based on aural evidence (confirmed in a phone conversation and email exchange with Hal McKusick). It could very well be Seldon Powell but to me, that remains insufficiently substantiated and so I am listing the tenor sax player as unknown until I find compelling evidence for Powell or anyone else.
5. The bassist and drummer sound to me much more like Burke and Thigpen than Duvivier and Wilson, respectively. Hal McKusick's recollections of the session lean in the same direction.

This session has recently (June 1, 2009) surfaced on the internet. It involves the French composer Edgard Varèse directing a group of New York City "workshop musicians" in performing a variety of "sounds." Teo Macero was one of the organizers. Apparently, parts of this session were used in Varèse's Poème Électronique. But these fragments seem to have little to do with jazz and although some have suggested this is one of the first "free jazz" sessions, that doesn't seem accurate since Varèse was instructing the musicians as to what to play on their given instruments. (Teddy Charles remembers nothing being written out.) The original tape of this workshop is stored at The Paul Sacher Foundation. Nineteen low quality mp3 files of this workshop are available at WFMU's Beware of the Blog.

This session, and the ones on June 18 and 20, 1957 below were an attempt to recreate a concert, organized by Gunther Schuller, held earlier at Brandeis University. The music was commissioned by The Brandeis University Festival of the Arts. The complete three-part version of All About Rosie was recorded on June 20, 1957.

Dick Healey (as) on a-b, e-f, i; (f) on c-e, g-h; Errol Buddle (ts) on a-b, d-g, i; (bsn) on c, h.
Healey, Buddle, Brokensha, Gaston and Rhode constituted The Australian Jazz Quintet under which name this session was issued. The Bruyninckx discography indicates that Teddy Charles plays vibraphone on tracks a and f but the vibraphonist on those does not sound like Charles. The bassist and drummer are not identified in the liner notes to this LP but I suspect that this session was probably done very close in time to the previous one, possible on the same day, so that Gaston and Segal seem the most likely suspects. Other possibilities are Addison Farmer (b) and Osie Johnson (d). Teddy Charles was the producer and arranger.
Charles is quoted in Joseph Muranyi's liner notes for Bethlehem 6030 as follows: "I've tried to realize Weill's intentions in creating a work with an ironic twist. Some of the pieces have just been reorchestrated while others I've translated fully into the modern idiom - chords and all. I felt that Weill's music was so strong that I purposely didn't go to see the show; in that way I could concentrate on and really feel only the music. Incidentally, I've occasionally used some modern jazz clichés just as Weill used some of the obvious ones of his day."

These performances were part of the Art Ford's Jazz Party series broadcast on radio and television. It is not known if the date given is that of the actual filming/recording or of broadcast. The information comes in part from "Art Ford's Jazz Party - 1958 TV & Radio Broadcasts" compiled by Bob Weir. Less complete information on this session is also found at Jazz On the Screen by David Meeker. The kinescope of most of this show has been made available on YouTube and based on visual evidence unavailable previously, some modifications to existing information have been made. Tracks l and m are not on the video and the personnel assignments for them are speculative, especially the rhythm section. Roy Burns, who is mentioned by Art Ford but not seen, may be the drummer on some tracks.
Weir indicates there is also a track called It Must Be Love performed as part of this show. On some tracks, an additional trumpet player and saxophonist are seen. As Weir has noted in his discography, there was a union requirement that some local musicians would appear on these shows in addition to the well-known players.
Track a is incomplete.
Track c features Tyree Glenn.
Tracks d and i are Maxine Sullivan vocals.
Track e features Roland Hanna.
Track f features Hank D'Amico.
Track g features Alec Templeton.
Track h features Johnny Windhurst.
Tracks j and k feature Coleman Hawkins.
Track l features Glenn, Templeton and a Maxine Sullivan vocal who is also heard on valve trombone on track m.
Teddy Charles solos on track b.

The personnel given for the tracks on this session on the liner notes to Bethlehem 6058 and in discographies is collective and includes musicians from the following session. Although not indicated previously, it seems most likely that the album Betty Blake Sings In a Tender Mood was the result of at least 2 recording sessions as shown here. The personnel assignments are best guesses based on auditioning the recording. Teddy Charles was producer and musical director of this session.

There have been suggestions, apparently coming from drummer and historian Kenny Washington, that Teddy Charles is present on an LP by the vocalist Pat Thomas, recorded around 1960, for the Strand label (Jazz Patterns, Strand SL/SLS 1015). The liner notes by Mort Goode do not provide personnel. Washington has suggested that the accompanying musicians include Booker Little (t), Curtis Fuller (tb), Roland Alexander (f, ts), Teddy Charles (vib), Kenny Burrell (g), Tommy Flanagan (p), Reggie Workman (b) and Charli Persip (d). Vibraphone is audible on three tracks: Star Eyes, Stella By Starlight and Almost Like Being In Love. It is possible that Charles is the vibraphonist but more information is needed before the personnel can be confirmed.

The music was adapted from themes by Stravinsky, Rimsky-Korsakoff and Khatchaturian. The LP liner notes and most discographies list incorrect personnel for title c, indicating it was recorded by the larger ensemble at the other May 6, 1963 session above. But this track was unquestionably recorded by a sextet including McGhee's trumpet which is clearly audible.

The recording date is speculative but probably some time in the mid-1960s. The personnel is collective and most likely, two or more sessions were involved. Specific track assignments for piano, bass and drums cannot be made. An unidentified trombone section is audible on tracks a and n. Unidentified saxophonists are audible on tracks a, b and l. Bongos can be heard on tracks a, f and n. A second guitar is audible on track i. None of these additional instruments are mentioned in the LP liner notes. The track timings given on the LP are inaccurate and the actual ones are shown above. Teddy Charles does not solo on any tracks.

'Round Midnight is not listed on the CD liner notes or in discographical sources. According to Sid Gribetz who wrote the liner notes, this is because the concert was originally meant to be issued on LP which format would not accomodate all the performances. When the CD was issued now with all the titles, the LP liner notes were used but not updated to reflect the presence of 'Round Midnight. Third Leveling is a freely improvised duet by Harold Danko and Teddy Charles. Track a is called "All the Things You Ain't." Track e is called "Nostalgia For Mingus."

| Teo Records CD: unnumbered — The Eclectic Side of Teo Macero (2000) | ||
This track features Charles and Danko in a New York City studio freely improvising parts as a duo while listening to the prerecorded London Philharmonic Orchestra performing Macero's composition. Macero cued the duo as to when to play and overdubbed the result. The recording date could not be recalled by any of the participants but probably took place sometime in the early 1990s. Teddy Charles is quite certain that this took place after the 1988 Verona concert above.
The CD, "The Eclectic Side of Teo Macero" also contains a track "The Devil's Cry" (7:05), composed by Macero that involves Teddy Charles freely improvising with an unidentified ensemble including a synthesizer. Neither Charles nor Macero could provide any information on when, where or how this track was produced and the CD provides no information.
