Rat Race Blues: The Musical Life of Gigi Gryce

Additions and Corrections to Discography

p. 381, discography session 530926 - The composer of "Purple Shades" is not Quincy Jones. The correct credit should read, Phil Dooley, Lew Douglas and Frank Lavere. See also correction on p. 119.

p. 391, discography session 550912 - The note should read: "Norgran 1083 is titled Dizzy Gillespie - Jazz Recital."

p. 393, discography session 560117 - The composer of "Majors" is Teddy Charles.

p. 396, discography sessions 560702, 560703 - "You're Driving Me Crazy" was arranged by Jimmy Mundy; "Poinciana" by Ralph Burns; "Yesterdays" and "Rock Me But Don't Roll Me" by Tony Scott; "The Moon Walks" by Eddie Sauter.

p. 399, discography session 570113 - Although Jepsen's discography indicates January 13, 1957, other discographies (Bruyninckx, Lord, Raben) indicate that these tracks were recorded at the March 13, 1957 session. The Columbia matrix numbers actually suggest a date in early July 1956 which seems unlikely since Donald Byrd and Gigi Gryce had not teamed up at that point to form the Jazz Lab ensemble. Thanks to George Avakian, we have now confirmed that these two nonet titles were, in fact, recorded on March 13, 1957 along with the quintet version of "Blue Concept." The matrix numbers CO56457 and CO56458 were originally intended for a Horace Silver recording of July 2, 1956 but were never used for that session and finally assigned out of sequence, at the March 13 Jazz Lab recording.

p. 403, discography session 570526 - There is an unidentified second bassist, probably Whitey Mitchell, who plays behind Oscar Pettiford's cello solos.

p. 404, discography session 570624 - The note states "Recording may not have survived." But see correction on p. 226.

p. 404-405, discography sessions 570625 and 570626 ("Monk's Music") - Additional takes of "Crepescule with Nellie" and "Abide with Me" have been discovered and issued in 2006 on a 2 CD set entitled "Thelonious Monk/John Coltrane: The Complete 1957 Riverside Recordings" (Riverside RCD2-30027-2).

p. 409, discography session 571217 - The correct title of matrix no. 21855 is "Smoke Signal" as found in earlier sessions. The plural version, "Smoke Signals," is listed on the LPs Verve MGV-8352/MGVS-6117 and Verve (Fr.) 2304-382 but the singular is found in copyright records and most other issues.

p. 411, discography session 580600 - Corrected track timings:
"Little Susan" - 2:20 should read 2:30.
"It Don't Mean a Thing" - 3:00 should read 3:16.
